My colleague Rand Stoneburner, who estimated that fidelity could have saved millions in South Africa alone, had hit the same surprise glass walls I had. He'd speak and, as he recounted, the people in AIDS World would try “to come up with some explanation to dismiss the data, from blaming laboratory error to bringing up every imagin able bias.” Stoneburner felt the world had gone mad. Yet the forces were quite earthly. Here's how he put it: “When I was finally able to get people to talk about [Uganda], they would ask me, 'What are the implications for this with respect to funding?'”1
