ABSTRACT

The imposing Flinders Petrie VI, your department chair, has commanded you to prepare an exit examination in archaeology for all students graduating from the department. ‘Make it tough’, he intones. The exam should draw on pedagogical techniques from both Piaget and Howard Gardner. It should give equal due to your chair’s ancestors, to Binford, and to Hodder. It should be able to assess students’ knowledge of techniques as varied as shovel testing and the use of GPS equipment, and ascertain that they know the importance of Chaco, Cahokia, and Copan. How would you construct this examination? What format would you use? What parts of the discipline would you cover?
