ABSTRACT
The major factor in the decline of the Late Prehistoric societies in the Southeast as a whole was directly related to the events beginning the historic period. However, even before European intrusion into the Southeast, there was a considerable reduction in scale of the more northern Mississippian societies. Many important centers such as Cahokia were virtually, if not completely, abandoned by the end of the fifteenth century.
