ABSTRACT

This chapter describes some conceptual frameworks from systems theory and systems thinking useful for creating an understanding of what are necessary to foster collaborative leadership that will support systemic change and a more equitable distribution of health, not merely the reproduction of a status quo. It also describes Center for Health Leadership Development (ICHLD). Health leadership training specifically for working professionals stands at the intersection of a number of disciplines and sources of curricula, among them academic-based health professions education, including medical, nursing, and public health education; adult learning; public health workforce development; and organizational development and the practices of leadership training that have emerged in corporate as well as non-profit and government contexts. The chapter looks at formal complex adaptive systems models include "internal models". In the conclusions, the chapter develops both theory and practice to support health leadership development in an increasingly interconnected world.
