ABSTRACT

Typical larger civilian or military airports are a mixture of building types and periods. Many represent the evolution of a World War II–era military airfield and still retain buildings and structures from that period. Others had their genesis in pre–World War II flying fields and contain one or more buildings, especially hangars, from the early era of aviation. These older buildings may have been joined or supplanted by more recent buildings and structures that testify to the growth and development of the airport. Yet others began in the economic expansion that followed the end of the Second World War.
