ABSTRACT

This chapter examines a genre of texts that the author refers to as 'get rich books'. These are books sold as a solution to financial difficulties and as a way to become wealthy. The chapter describes the four get-rich books, and also describes, in general terms, the experience of attending seminars related to books like these. It provides a brief overview of existing research in the fields of self-books, the New Age movement and prosperity theology. The chapter focuses on the use of narrative, repetition and assertion before documenting the laws and rules that structure the texts and their associated worldviews. It draws on material from four books that claim to make the reader rich. They were identified after consulting online sources that recommend get rich books as well as bestseller lists on Amazon. The chapter presents extracts from the books, the material, guidance and laws will seem odd and unconvincing.
