ABSTRACT

The traditional waste management often focuses from the point of waste generation when it comes to waste management, however, a sustainable waste management cannot be ensured if the whole life phases of waste, i.e. resource extraction, production, consumption, waste generation and management are not considered. This chapter argues that sustainable production and consumption are the missing links to ensure an effective waste management system. The chapter links waste management practices in the light of urbanization, consumption and economic growth. The key waste management challenges are identified through a critical analysis of sustainable consumption practices and various urban resource flows, which justify the necessity of a systemic change of urban waste management approaches.
