ABSTRACT

The connections – or tensions – between textual and extra-textual factors in translation have often been addressed under the umbrella term of ‘performability’. The expression ‘staging translation’ invokes putting translation at the centre of the stage in the discussion, and is present in most contributions. There are many agents involved in adapting translation, with varying roles and statuses which need to be made visible and accounted for. Especially apt are process-oriented researches on how translation dialogues with all the gamut of theatrical experiences. This chapter explores the implications of relocating translation by emphasizing its access across languages, inclusion needs and education on theatre and translation. Seminars on theatre translation incorporating the different voices involved in theatre production can be enriching experiences for training. Supertitles, are a useful tool that was created to provide access to the text of opera performances in foreign languages in a context of growing international performance productions.
