ABSTRACT

The history of South Asia is very rich and shows reflections of civilisation since Paleolithic ages.1 Geographically, South Asia is clearly an identifiable region with Himalayas in the north and Indian Ocean in the south and the extension from the Persian Gulf to the Straits of Malaca.2 Present-day South Asia is comprised of eight countries, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, considering membership in the SAARC as the basis. All the countries of the region share their political boundaries except for Sri Lanka and Maldives which are separated from the main landmass by Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, respectively.
