ABSTRACT

This chapter explains some of the historical and political context to cultural diversity. It has sought to critique the curriculum while challenging the reader to not only consider their own cultural views but also to think about policy in the national and international forum. The chapter discusses in depth the evolving nature of the curriculum in the UK and suggested that at times this does not particularly reflect the fluid nature of communities in the UK. Ang has written about elements of cultural diversity that are encapsulated in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Ang draws a parallel here between Syal's experience and the EYFS, suggesting that it does not focus on cultural diversity enough. The chapter concludes that teachers should use differing cultures as an opportunity for teaching, particularly in terms of geography and history of the world.
