ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the important aspect of how a child develops their identity. It seeks to examine some of the challenges that families go through when coming to the UK as asylum seekers and refugees and how these families' views of education might differ from what is provided in the UK. The chapter discusses the meaning of identity and how children start to recognise their own individuality when young before deliberating on the meaning of words such as 'culture', 'religion' and 'spirituality' and how all of these can have an impact on a child's growing sense of identity. It poses a challenge to practitioners to reflect on their own identity and to consider the importance of this to them and the children that they work with. The chapter has focused on the important aspect of how children develop their identity while discussing the differing views of the role of children from across the world.
