ABSTRACT

Religious education (RE) runs through British society, permeating its civic, legal, architectural and artistic institutions, landscapes and communities. However, one of the key challenges facing the teaching of RE is that of meaning and relevance. In other words, what is the worth of teaching RE? Such questioning presupposes and tends to subtlety imply a materialistic viewpoint in education. Undeniably, RE has lots to offer for social and nation building. However, at the same time, the benefits derived from RE are sometimes unquantifiable, such as those concerned with the development of the moral, social, spiritual and cultural dimensions of learners. Teachers, therefore, need the tools through which the latent potential and capacities of all learners can be ignited. This book provides teachers and educators with a collection of teaching methods which will assist them in this exciting and challenging role of imparting religious education. The numerous and different methods suggested within each topic can be used for other topics within this book, and possibly with other RE topics not featured in this book.
