ABSTRACT

By early 1944, Soviet troops entering eastern Poland were encountering Polish AK units. The relationship between the Poles and the Russians was at acrossroads. In Poland the Provisional Government of National Unity was in power, a Communist front with Mikolajczyk a suspended oddity. Poland was always on Jozef Hieronim Retinger's mind even when he was deeply involved in international affairs. According to Warsaw, Retinger monitored Polish emigre affairs for the British government. Retinger was quick to point out that he never applied for British citizenship and always considered himself a Pole of which he was proud. There are a few reports that Retinger considered creating a "Polish Communist Party inemigration". For all practical purposes the British ignored the London Polish government. The 1944 mission has remained controversial ever since, and its secrecy and British involvement have done much to create the legend of Retinger as anagent of London.
