ABSTRACT

Retinger's conversion to the cause of European unity and "world government" he ascribed to a period of "germination" from1916-1924. He was only in Mexico from time to time, never more than several months, and managed to obtain a British visa in 1924 and the home office assured him that renewing it would be effortless. Thus, Retinger was free to travel about Europe again. He arranged press credentials for the United States and Mexico for the "Weekly Westminster". Retinger embarked on what he later called his "first attempts to make the unity of Europe work". He, in his words, "got religion". Fimmen was concerned about rumors of a war between Poland and Soviet Russia and asked Retinger to go to Poland to discuss the matter bluntly with Prime Minister Wladyslaw Sikorski. Retinger's relationship with Sikorski would last until Sikorski's death in 1943 and was the most controversial, significant, and mysterious activity in Retinger's life leading to innumerable charges and endless speculation.
