ABSTRACT

Carnival in Haiti has been viewed as a lens into popular power and politics. Political demonstrations in Haiti often manifest as musical performances. This article explores how the seemingly unrelated and seldom associated phenomena of kanaval and political manifestasyon are in fact intricately intertwined, while reassessing the use of the Kreyòl terms anraje (a state of physical and emotional exuberance) and angaje (an expression of political engagement) that are often applied to describe musical (and civic) behavior in both contexts.
