ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the feasibility of efforts to mitigate and reduce impacts. It analyses the technologies that are being cued up to lower the industry's growing footprint, and come to an understanding of the most promising options to improve the airline industry's carbon performance in the first half of the Twenty first century. Air travel is the essential ingredient of the new travel economy. It fuels globalization and trade and has become the lynchpin of global business activities. The final decision was made in October 2013 in Montreal by the full International Civil Aviation Organization Assembly. It was agreed that a global market-based mechanism for all aviation would be finalized in 2016 and implemented in 2020, without any binding commitment. The aviation industry is committed to improving its technology substantially to reduce its carbon impacts. This strategy relies largely on the manufacturers of aircraft.
