ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a migrant typology based on the results of empirical research from rural Mali and Senegal. The migrant typology categorizes seven different types of migrants based on the following characteristics: socio-demographic variables, the duration and destination of migration, the motives of migration and the impact of environmental factors on migration. The typology helps identify those whose migration is influenced by climate change and environmental stress and developing specific measures to respond to the needs of different types of migrants. The types of migrants differ according to the influence that environmental factors have on their migration and the character of their migration, either voluntary or forced, which helps to identify and address those people who are referred to as environmental migrants in literature.
