ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the emergence of PISA as a global educational policy instrument and its increasing influence on large-scale educational reforms around the world. After providing a brief description of the PISA benchmark measure, a summary of the key arguments for and against its expanding utilization in educational policy spheres is presented. This chapter also summarizes some of the more prominent policy effects of PISA that have been reported in the literature. The conclusion articulates the rationale behind the selection of particular scholars, disciplinary perspectives, and educational jurisdictions represented within this edited volume.
