ABSTRACT

The concept or term engagement has been used to refer to a psychological state, performance construct or disposition. Maslach defines engagement as the positive antithesis of burnout. Burnout had been conceptualised as having three psychological components: emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and reduced personal accomplishment. At the opposite end of the scale, engagement is defined as comprising energy, involvement and sense of efficacy. The Enhancing Engagement in Medical Leadership Project commissioned the development of a tool to measure and differentiate two aspects of medical engagement on a personal level and from an organisational context. The Medical Engagement Scale (MES) is a validated measure for predicting the level of engagement of medical staff within an organisation. Independently collected performance indicators within the same time scale as the collected MES were analysed to see whether there were observable links between medical engagement and organisational performance.
