ABSTRACT

This chapter examines a range of leadership diagnostic tools while reflecting on the learning acquired from them. The leadership diagnostics questionnaires aim to assess an individual's leadership behaviours and leadership style. Each and every clinician in the healthcare setting should see themselves as a leader irrespective of their job title and hierarchy. The Healthcare Leadership Model is made up of nine 'leadership dimensions', quantified on a four-part scale: 'essential', 'proficient', 'strong' and 'exemplary'. The Healthcare Leadership Model assesses leadership behaviours through a series of questions which explores an individual's self-perception under individual domains. In a complex setting like healthcare, it is physically impossible for a leader to influence every aspect of patient care and decision making, and effective, quality and safe care needs to be deployed by the healthcare team. For shared leadership, leaders need to have a vision for the future, a strategy for appropriate delegation and an ability to facilitate collaboration and team-work.
