ABSTRACT

Newsmaking practices around the world have changed significantly in past years, mostly as a result of the rise of new digital technologies. While both journalistic freedom and violence towards journalists impact news-making, this chapter focuses on digital transformation. It presents Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) journalists' views about new technology particularly as it relates to the practice of journalism. The chapter explores journalists' reported use of social media in their practice both as source and for audience feedback. It includes journalists' opinions about whether certain content should not be covered, particularly if it is content that could aid an enemy, and about government control of the internet and of political and entertainment content. The chapter also describes the different types of hierarchies in newsrooms with the aim to clarify how newsroom structures may have changed under digitalization of media organizations and journalistic work.
