ABSTRACT
After only a few weeks recovering from the strain of his work in Stans, Pestalozzi was given permission to teach in a school in the small town of Burgdorf. The town, built on a hill to the north of Bern, is dominated by its castle and it was in the castle itself that Pestalozzi had been allocated accommodation. The school was one of the two boys' schools in the town and was attended by the sons of those who were not full Burgdorf citizens. In charge of it was a cobbler named Dysli, with whom Pestalozzi was now going to share the teaching.
