ABSTRACT

This chapter stresses the striking behavioral consequences of neglecting one half of space and called attention to the relationships between unilateral neglect and right hemisphere damage. It is also surprising that most theories advanced to explain hemi-neglect have failed to account for the prevalence of this syndrome in right brain-damaged patients, which can be considered as one of the most characteristic aspects of unilateral neglect. The most severe forms of hemi-neglect are usually observed in the acute stages of the evolution of extensive vascular disorders in the territory of the middle cerebral artery. The test of visual recognition constructed to maximize neglect resulting from a poor exploration of the half space contralateral to the damaged hemisphere was a test of Searching for Animals on a large board. The test of visual recognition devised to maximize neglect resulting from defective extraction of information from one side of space during eye fixation was a test of Overlapping Figures.
