ABSTRACT
G o r d o n did not tarry at Berber. He had consolidated his position at that point by appealing to the interests of the local inhabitants and by assuring them against injustice. He knew, however, that Khartoum dominated the Sudan. He was, therefore, in a hurry to get there in order to arrest the strong current in the Mahdi’s favour which had been intensified by General Baker’s defeat.
