The first consecutive narrative given by Wingate is based upon the journal of Bordeini Bey, who is described as “ an eminent Khartoum merchant who willingly gave up his large stocks of grain to Gordon for the supply of the garrison ” .1 He was at Khartoum throughout the siege. His version is that of the besieged. Gordon appears to have trusted him and to have received him at the palace on the eve of the tragic morning.
