ABSTRACT

Toy ads are just a small part of the picture. In today's culture, we are under bombardment. We rarely if ever find ourselves in an environment completely free of ads and other marketing materials. As media literacy educators work to engage students in conversations and study about commercial marketing, one have to encompass more advertising in more mediums than ever before. In the pre-Common Core era, educators were teaching students "techniques of persuasion." The study of advertising fits nicely in many Common Core standards, including these two: Speaking and Listening Standards: Analyze the purpose of information presented in diverse media and formats and evaluate the motives behind its presentation. An art approach might involve studying layout, design, color, font, and image composition. For English language arts and social studies teachers: Think about the words "purpose" and "motive" in the Common Core 8th-grade standard.
