ABSTRACT

The presence of architectural attributes such as lighting, windows, and views as visual stimuli in rooms have been found to improve positive mood and satisfaction and decrease mental fatigue in occupants. This chapter presents survey results from full-time employees at both the Nelson-Atkins and Phoenix Art Museum. First, it presents an overall summary of survey results, followed by a detailed discussion of the results of each category of the survey. While some post-occupancy evaluations and visitor studies of front stage, public spaces in museums can be found, post-occupancy evaluations of back stage areas in museums, or at least those that are publically available, are rare indeed. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and Phoenix Art Museum employees participated in an online survey about their perceptions and experiences in the back stage spaces and front stage spaces of the museum. Employee satisfaction was associated with windows and views more than lighting levels..
