ABSTRACT
Cambridge University's decision to open local examinations to English girls in 1865 seemed small compared to certain events occurring in America at that time. Given the loss of over 600,000 men and the maiming of many more in the Civil War, women in America experienced a rising status and growing professional opportunities. 1 As women entered new occupations, society became more sensitive to their educational requirements.
