ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of the book. The book looks at the constructivist theory, with particular attention to the transnational element, namely the interaction between the EU and Russia at multiple levels. It sets the context for the relationship, providing the conceptual framework that grounds analysis of particular bilateral policy arenas as well the regional and multilateral context. Tom Casier explores the interaction between these two diverging perceptions, and how, through 'attributional bias', a logic of competition and a spiral of mutual distrust emerged, culminating in the events of 2014 and following. Petra Guasti explores one of the most contested arenas of value dissonance between Europe and Russia and its impact on another transnational institution, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). In applying a constructivist and transnational approach, the book seeks to avoid a one-sided power perspective and to explore the transnational interactions between the actors.
