ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on entrepreneurial activities and entrepreneurship literature from diverse actors and industry sectors to establish a wider framework for an analysis of cultural entrepreneurship which tends to be unrecognised in comparison with dominant discourses. It begins with an overview of entrepreneurship studies although this is not a thorough mapping of all aspects of entrepreneurship literature, and focuses on some key ideas, theories and authors as they relate to the argument. The chapter draws on literature which supports the idea that entrepreneurial actions can be found in a variety of contexts and by diverse individuals. It suggests that by engaging with diverse forms entrepreneurship there are valuable insights for a study of cultural entrepreneurs. The chapter also draws on literature which presents alternatives to the male entrepreneur by exploring gender, ethnicity and hidden entrepreneurship. It aims to expand the range of identities, definitions and characteristics associated with the entrepreneur.
