ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the rise of the cultural entrepreneur; a term which is relatively new. It discusses who is a 'cultural entrepreneur'? What are the characteristics of a 'cultural entrepreneurship'? By investigating the rise of the cultural entrepreneur, the auhtor aims to connect the field of business and entrepreneurship with cultural studies and cultural policy studies, to inform the understanding of cultural entrepreneurship. It shows to create a dialogue between cultural studies and cultural policy studies and discusses a shift from the notion of the cultural worker to the cultural entrepreneur, with an emphasis on the challenges of entrepreneurial modes of work. The chapter introduces a sample of cultural entrepreneurs, the context and methodological approach, illustrates this through the notion of 'becoming' a cultural entrepreneur and the fluidity this presents in relation to a person's identity. It attempts to deconstruct this paradigm and opens up opportunities to re-imagine the entrepreneur, from various perspectives, including the idea of the cultural entrepreneur.
