ABSTRACT

Europe in the early years of the twentieth century is imperial and the world’s dominant continent, the centre of several countries’ empires. Rich and affluent it may be, but there are extremes of poverty. Political violence occurs in many of the countries. Several of them are subjected to sustained periods of violent attacks by terrorist groups, with either objectives of territorial liberation or ideological re-making of society or in the case of the anarchists simple destruction. Many of the attacks are carried out by “lone wolf” individuals, but these individuals often have links to groups of sympathisers on an international scale. The attacks target military personnel, police, government officials and politicians, and the victims also include a significant number of heads of state and members of the ruling royal families.
