ABSTRACT

De Valera is smuggled out of Ireland to America where he embarks upon a well- organised and well-received tour, publicising and fundraising for the Irish cause. He “acquires” the title of President of the Irish Republic (Priomh Aire) but embroils himself in the internal feuding of the Irish–Americans, and is constantly at loggerheads with the powerful Friends of Irish Freedom Society, and its leaders John Devoy and Judge Cohalan. His long visit to the United States is a popular success, but the main objective – diplomatic recognition by the United States for Ireland as a nation – remains unachieved.
