ABSTRACT
Multiple jeopardy research looks at the compounding effects of race and ethnicity on older people. Some studies find that multiple jeopardy describes only some characteristics of older minority members' lives. Health and social service professionals need more education about minority aging. The trends can lead to a smaller income gap between minority and dominant group members as the age. The studies compare the minority experience of aging with the experience of aging in the dominant group. It also looks at differences between minority groups, cultural subgroups within a minority group, and age cohorts among minority group members. The minority older population will increase in the years ahead, and this population will increase in diversity. A look at the African American family and community should focus on the unique experience of the African American older person and on the diversity of experiences within the African American older population.
