ABSTRACT

This essay explores spirituality and sport in three broad areas. First, it looks at sport as civic religion and generic spirituality in which sport provides significant and holistic meaning. Second, it examines some of the critical issues in sport and spirituality, including critiques of the concept of spirituality, issues to do with negative ends of spirituality, and religion and sport. Finally, it examines the use of spiritual techniques in sport, noting the different ends these can be used for.
