ABSTRACT

This essay explores the influence of spirituality on fashion. Malcolm Bernard (2002, 8) believes that spirituality not only relates to one’s activities, but primarily to “something that one wears”; particularly across societies that now yield different religions, cultures, and spiritual beliefs. The essay aims to acknowledge the significant interface between spirituality and fashion in 21st century societal pursuits. The growth in spiritual attention renders the subject as popular as the latest fashion clothing fad, an occurrence that arguably provides designers with the opportunity to demonstrate that they are on trend by introducing to the catwalk an array of different religious and spiritual themes displayed in their various designs. Some couture designers such as Miuccia Prada (Eagan 2014, 13) recognize that the growth in spiritual interest provides creative scope to design garments with a spiritual theme based on the belief that “what you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today” in environments that are becoming more heterogeneous.
