ABSTRACT

Researchers constantly seek to qualify and problematise their research and research outcomes, while policy makers want immediate answers and press for practical applications and definitions. This chapter offers practical advice that can be used to develop entrepreneurial skills to enhance research impact. The Economic and Social Research Council and the Higher Education Funding Council for England commissioned and funded the Teaching and Learning Research Programme (TLRP), a ten-year effort from 1999 to 2009 to revitalise educational research in the UK using substantial awards to a range of collaborating investigators. One of the first education initiatives of the New Labour government was for David Blunkett, the new Secretary of State for Education, to commission a report from Professor Bernard Crick, a political theorist, on the introduction of citizenship education into English schools in 1998. The three case studies described in the chapter illustrate different actors operating in different policy communities.
