ABSTRACT

Then suddenly and unexpectedly an opportunity, one of which he had never dreamed, was given him, which would fulfil all his desires and longings. The post of Director of Education of Munich 6 had become vacant and had been offered to Dr Niklas, a protestant. So much criticism had, however, been raised in this catholic town against this important post having been offered to a protestant, that poor Dr Niklas had felt morally obliged to decline the offer. He was made head of the humanistic Gymnasium as compensation, and Kerschensteiner, whom Dr Niklas himself had recommended, obtained the post at the head of the Munich school system. This meant that Kerschensteiner was virtually in control of the organization of the entire Munich school system.
