ABSTRACT

Roughly one in ten of Armthorpe’s 14,000 population work at Markham Main Colliery. It is a relatively new development, only sunk in the 1920s. Situated on the coalfield that stretches from Sheffield to the East Coast, of the nine pits in the Doncaster area it was the only one to make a substantial profit prior to the strike. It was not directly threatened by the pit closure programme.
