ABSTRACT
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines a variety of issues all of which are being prominently affected by the use of digital media. It aims to provide a thorough, yet accessible and enjoyable, discussion of many of the major themes pertinent to the pursuance of healthy sexual encounters in the 21st century. The book addresses the general topics of young people and digital media usage in sexual contexts. It considers the theoretical and conceptual tools of Sociology and Media Studies to describe the way young people in a climate of rapid societal change use emergent technologies to consume digital resources and/or perform activities of an intimate or sexual nature. The book clarifies the role of digital media in the process of exploration of intimacy and construction of experience, social reality and gender roles.
