ABSTRACT

In 2013 the DfE produced new revised guidance for schools in England on the delivery of the national curriculum. It stated that 'a high quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design'. By the end of Key Stage 3, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the programme of study. For pupils with significant learning difficulties, the P scales may be used to monitor small steps of progress. Pupils should develop a critical understanding of artists, architects and designers, expressing reasoned judgements that can inform their own work. Projects and units of work can be developed and planned by using the planning template. This includes consideration of the aims/expectations of the unit and how these should be reflected in the assessment criteria.
