ABSTRACT

Teachers are drowning in advice; a plethora of initiatives and ever moving goalposts that make the job an ever-increasing challenge. Many of these external directives seem disconnected from the daily role of the teacher. Legendary basketball coach John Wooden constantly emphasised the importance of becoming better rather than winning – getting better rather than being good. He urged his players to try their hardest to improve on that day, to make that practice a masterpiece. He suggested that we can apply ourselves each day to becoming a little better and by doing so we become a lot better. The most successful people make getting to the heart of things the heart of their approach. The only real path to success is through the practising and establishing of unexciting, often mundane yet often challenging daily disciplines which over time lead to big changes.
