ABSTRACT

The Indian culture, which had been passed down from father to son and from mother to daughter over generations after migration to Suriname, has continued to be passed down in Holland. For Hindustani women, migration to the Netherlands was a big step forward as they could afford the luxury of various modern conveniences that they did not have access to in Suriname. In some cases Hindustanis from Suriname living in the Netherlands feel tempted to say that they are from India, thereby implying that they belong to a rich cultural tradition. Interestingly, just like the Hindustanis living in Suriname had consciously preserved their cultural heritage in order to retain their Bhojpuri Indian identities, the Hindustanis who migrated to Holland also maintain their own religion, cultural habits and celebrations while living in Dutch society. The Hindustani community has now attained a good level of affluence, but alongside there is an increasing urge to remain connected with their roots.
