ABSTRACT

This chapter draws together the empirical findings from Chapters 3–5 and considers these in the context of the ideas associated with health, well-being and theory presented in Chapters 1 and 2. Specifically, this chapter considers the importance of community learning to health and well-being by considering the value of martial arts as a vehicle that brings people together, links different groups and challenges cultural assumptions by connecting individuals from different backgrounds via a community of shared practice. The importance of ownership of health and well-being as well as the value of access to knowledge that relates to the cultural and lifestyle aspects inherent in martial arts is explored. The chapter concludes by considering the implications of changing the way health and well-being, and the ownership of these domains, are conceptualised.
