ABSTRACT

A democratic ideology is forged within democratic societies where the democratic ideals of liberty and equality are prized. Children and teenagers rely on adults to provide the enriching context in which to develop their ideology in tandem with their identity. Because identity and ideology are connected intimate expressions of self, philosophical counseling can further students' liberation. Ideology has been dubbed "the most elusive concept in the whole of social science". In the United States, a person's political ideology, in its most simplistic form, means being labeled on a spectrum ranging from liberal to conservative on a variety of specific issues. To facilitate the ideas on ideology, it is beneficial to characterize a liberal and left-leaning political ideology as a social justice ideology and a conservative and right-leaning political ideology as liberty ideology. As social studies teachers lead students to decide upon their identity and ideology, the teacher introduces topics through curriculum that lead to the examination of things that matter.
