ABSTRACT

Reading is one of the most important things a child can learn at primary school. The ability to read fluently and understand what they read gives children access to new ideas and knowledge, not to mention the lifetime of joy that being a reader can bring. The term 'reading for pleasure' has become the most common name for the reading that children choose to do voluntarily at home and at school, as opposed to the directed reading of the school curriculum. The term 'reading for pleasure' has been defined as: Reading that people do of their own free will, anticipating the satisfaction that they will get from the act of reading. The quality and consistency of teaching at a school is one of the key factors that can affect children's progress in reading. The reading environment in a school encompasses far more than the physical spaces where books are stored and displayed and where children can read.
