4: Connectivity and social change: Roman goods outside the Empire (100 BCe–400 Ce)

Numerous artefacts of foreign origin were recovered from a wide variety of indigenous sites in temperate Europe dated between the late Republic and the late Empire (using a conventional Rome-centred chronological framework). They appeared in domestic, funerary or sacred contexts, frequently associated with locally sourced goods, and were sometimes modied or, more often, imitated.
