Inthistheory,aclauseconsistsofasetoflinguisticelements,the

grammaticalrelationstheseelementsbeartotheclauseandthelevel(s)at

whichtheelementsbeargrammaticalrelationstootherelements.

Theinventoryofgrammaticalrelationsinclude:thePredicaterelation,

representedwiththe"P"R-sign,"subject"("1"),"directobject"("2"),

"indirectobject"("3").Thelatterthreerelationsarecalled.trnnrelations.

The1and2relationstogethercomprisethenuclearrelations.Nonterm

relationsincludetheobliquerelationssuchas"Goal","Locative",

"Benefactive","Instrumental",etc.)andaspecialrelation,the"Chomeur"

relation.Finally,thereisthesetofoverlayrelations,oneofwhichis

discussedinChapter7:"Topic".
