ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the origins and consequences of the isolation of power elites from the underlying social structure, and how the latter in turn evolves toward mass support for, and the establishment of, populist and authoritarian regimes. It draws from the observation of recent developments in advanced societies but also from the analyses of similar developments in the past by European and Latin American social scientists.
