ABSTRACT
How is democracy undermined from within? What social forces are behind the erosion or collapse of republican institutions? How can we characterize a system that rules by confusion? What, in historical experience and in the interpretative literature can shed light on the rising wave of national-populism? What are the consequences for world order? These are the questions for which this chapter provides some clues in search of adequate answers.
